The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that about 76 million Americans get sick as a result of foodborne illnesses. And about 5,000 cases result in fatalities. Food poisoning can happen after eating prepared foods from restaurants, delis and even catering services. In fact, a report compiled by the CDC indicates that 29,738 incidents of illness were traced back to caterers between 1998 and 2008. Researchers said this was because caterers produce large amounts of the same dishes for large parties or receptions. This means cases that occur can often be linked together by attendees who know each other and experience similar symptoms.
